The European Commission has decided to promote the recovery of the European Union after the economic debacle caused by the coronavirus crisis, includes a disbursement in the future European Defense Fund of 7,014 million euros between 2021 and 2027. That is the amount allocated in the multi-year budget for that period, which in total amounts to 1,074 billion euros.
The European Commission initially proposed allocating € 13 billion to this European Defense Fund (EDF). The fight against the pandemic, however, already lowered that estimate last May to between 8,000 and 9,000 million euros. An amount that for the big four of the EU (Germany, France, Italy and Spain) was insufficient, so they have been putting pressure on the rest of the partners with the argument that now, “more than ever, an ambitious fund of European defense ”.
